Cancer center to undergo $22.7 million update

Trinity Health Grand Rapids has announced plans to invest $22.7 million in the Richard J. Lacks Sr. Cancer Center. The project will ensure that Lacks Cancer Center remains a state-of-the-art facility, using the best treatments available to help patients and families at every stage of their cancer journey.

Key additions and renovations include oncology pharmacy, infusion therapy, brachytherapy vault, additional centers of excellence clinical programs and services, growing its team of board-certified medical oncologists and other cancer specialists, a new lobby, café, and renovated patient rooms.

“Our commitment to cancer patients in West Michigan means having the best comprehensive care and support – close to home,” said Matt Biersack, MD, President, Trinity Health Grand Rapids. “Lacks Cancer Center is a top treatment facility where patients and their families can get all the care they need, all in one place. Our team of medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists work together under one roof to create a personalized treatment plan for a patient’s specific needs.”

As part of the investment, Trinity Health Grand Rapids plans to expand our colorectal cancer program toward formal recognition as a Center of Excellence through NAPRC accreditation.

“The addition of a state-of-the-art oncology pharmacy and the expansion of both oncology and supportive infusion services will significantly enhance the patient experience," said Lloyd G. Geddes, Jr., MD, MBA, Medical Director, Trinity Health Richard J. Lacks Sr. Cancer Center and Executive Director, Cancer Network of West Michigan. "This should reduce delays in treatment, improve coordination of care, and ensure patients can receive comprehensive, high-quality therapies close to home."

Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in Fall 2026 with the goal of being completed by Fall 2028. Lacks Cancer Center will remain open to patients and their families while construction is being completed.

More than $6 million of this investment has been raised through philanthropy and the generosity of our donors.

Trinity Health Grand Rapids is a member of the Cancer Network of West Michigan, a joint operating agreement between Trinity Health and University of Michigan Health-West to leverage the combined resources and capabilities of the two award-winning West Michigan health systems and Michigan Medicine, the academic medical center of the University of Michigan.
