STEM Greenhouse will host its 10th anniversary open house on November 7, 2024. Recently honored with the 2024 Governor’s Service Award for Youth Impact, the nonprofit will unveil renovated learning spaces at Innovation Central High School (ICHS) for its STEM Scholars 2.0 program, continuing its mission to advance educational equity for historically marginalized communities.

This event marks a historic collaboration—the first-ever partnership between Grand Rapids Public Schools (GRPS) and a Black-founded nonprofit resulting in a dedicated education space. More than just a milestone for STEM Greenhouse and GRPS, this achievement underscores the critical importance of representation and inclusivity in education.

In Kent County, recent data reveals that only 1 in 12 Black 7th-grade students is proficient in math, compared to 1 in 4 white students—a stark disparity. With many students lacking the basics they need to succeed, especially in marginalized communities where access to quality education is still limited, organizations like STEM Greenhouse aim to bridge the educational gaps.

The redesigned rooms—including a fully equipped computer lab, science lab, and an innovative programming center—are a testament to the collaborative efforts of STEM Greenhouse and Grand Rapids Public Schools, with generous support from the Wege Foundation, Steelcase Foundation, Meijer Foundation, Frey Foundation, and Custer. Adorned with artwork by local Black artists, the space celebrates their rich culture and heritage, offering students a vivid reminder that they belong in the world of STEM.

“For the past 10 years, we’ve worked to disrupt the barriers that have kept Black and Brown students out of STEM careers and higher education. Every student who walks through these doors will know they can have a future in STEM—and a village of support," said Dr. Keli Christopher, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of STEM Greenhouse.

Over the past decade, the organization has impacted the lives of thousands of students—primarily Black, Latinx, and those from low-income backgrounds—through innovative programs that emphasize experiential learning and diverse mentorship. This anniversary not only celebrates these achievements but also serves as a reminder that the journey toward educational equity is ongoing.

"STEM Greenhouse is more than an organization; it's a movement powered by a village of educators, professionals, businesses, and individuals who have an unwavering belief in our youth," said Dr. Christopher. "This new space symbolizes progress, representation, and the unlimited potential that exists when we invest in all students."
