Scholarships available for students entering trade industries

The Better Business Bureau® in Western Michigan Educational Foundation announces the first annual Better Business Bureau Trades Scholarship for students pursuing a trades career following high school. The scholarship is designed to ease some of the costs associated with getting a job in the trades, such as tools and clothing.

“Businesses are eager to find quality employees,” said Lisa Frohnapfel, President and CEO of the Better Business Bureau in Western Michigan. “BBB hopes to encourage students to explore these valuable careers, while also supporting BBB Accredited businesses looking for the next generation of workers.”

The BBB Trades Scholarship is open to high school graduates of the class of 2024 who live and attended school within the Better Business Bureau of Western Michigan’s 38-county service area. Students must also be employed by, or have accepted an offer of employment from, a BBB Accredited Business within the BBB of Western Michigan service area. Eligible trades include construction, welding, landscaping, painting, heating and cooling, auto and machinery repair, pest control, and tree removal.

Scholarships between $50 and $1,000 will be awarded. Based on the number of awards and the availability of funds, some awardees may receive partial approval.

The first application window will close on May 3. Awards will be announced by May 24. A second application window for businesses and students will be available on June 1, and awards will be announced by June 15.

The Better Business Bureau Trades Scholarship is sponsored by Above Roofing, Mercantile Bank of Michigan, Morris Builders, and PR Design Build.
