The Literacy Center of West Michigan will host its Wine & Words event on Thursday, September 12, in conjunction with National Literacy Month. Wine & Words will be held in the backyard of Lion Rock Manor, owned by event underwriter Mark Peters, CEO of Butterball Farms, featuring an evening of wine and food, word games, and networking.

The annual event aims to raise awareness and support for addressing adult literacy challenges in West Michigan. In Kent County alone, upwards of 85,000 individuals read below a fourth-grade level in English.

“Adult literacy seems to fly under everybody’s radar,” said Wendy Falb, Executive Director, Literacy Center of West Michigan. “When you look at health outcomes, housing issues, children’s outcomes, labor market needs — we could improve all of these if we improved adult literacy.”

The Literacy Center of West Michigan works to foster a just and vibrant community through customized adult literacy programs, including 1-on-1 coaching, English classes, family literacy events, and workplace services. These initiatives aim to empower individuals, improve quality of life, and support the economy of West Michigan.

The event is sponsored by, among other individuals and organizations, Matthew and Kristy Becker, Rich and Dawn Antonini, Comerica, Corewell Health, Fifth Third Bank, Meijer, and Waseyabek Development Company, and Elizabeth Welch and Brian Schwartz.
