President of the Grand Rapids Symphony Keith C. Elder announced that the 2025 Celebration of Soul concert guest artist will be acclaimed Chicago-born rapper, actor, and activist Common. Known for his contributions to music, film, and social justice, Common has garnered three Grammy Awards, an Academy Award, a Primetime Emmy Award, and a Golden Globe Award throughout his career. The announcement was made at the 2024 Celebration of Soul concert featuring Leela James on February 10.

The Grand Rapids Symphony established the Celebration of Soul in 2006 to honor the achievements of individuals and organizations that significantly contribute to diversity, inclusion, and community bridge-building in West Michigan.

Additionally, the Celebration of Soul includes the presentation of the Dr. MaLinda P. Sapp Legacy Award, recognizing exceptional leaders and organizations for their efforts in promoting engagement, inclusion, and diversity within the community. The award is named in honor of Dr. MaLinda P. Sapp for her distinguished leadership and commitment to advancing cultural competency and understanding.

The Celebration of Soul Gala also supports the Mosaic Scholarship program, an initiative providing African-American and Latinx students aged 12-18 in Kent County with the opportunity for one-on-one lessons with Symphony musicians, workshops, and performances.
