A seasoned clinician and executive, Kate Veenstra, has been appointed the new Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) at University of Michigan Health-West. Veenstra brings over 18 years of experience in nursing and leadership to the role.

Veenstra’s tenure at UM Health-West started in 2006 as a bedside nurse and extended to her recent role as interim CNO. She has held various leadership positions within the organization, including associate chief nursing officer, where she spearheaded initiatives to improve patient care and operational efficiency.

“Kate’s caring nature, innovative mindset, clinical expertise and commitment to nursing excellence make her the ideal leader for this role,” said Dr. Ronald Grifka, president of UM Health-West.

Veenstra’s accomplishments include developing the Amy Van Andel Nursing Scholars program, a talent partnership with Grand Rapids Community College and the UM Health-West Foundation. She also co-pioneered a clinical nurse leader program, which significantly reduced cardiac readmissions and length of stay. Additionally, Veenstra co-chaired the clinical care committee during the COVID-19 pandemic response.

“I am honored to step into the role and deeply committed to continuing a culture of excellence in our nursing community,” Veenstra said. “At UM Health-West, we foster a unique culture of compassion and professionalism, and I am inspired by our dedicated team.”

Veenstra holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from University of Michigan-Flint, a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) in clinical nurse leadership from Saint Xavier University, and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from Calvin University. She is currently pursuing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from University of Michigan-Flint.
