The documentary “First Voice Generation” will be screened on Monday, October 21, at 7 p.m. at the Park Theatre in Holland, Michigan. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. The film follows the lives of three Latino high school students in Holland, sheds light on their struggles with identity and belonging as children of Mexican immigrants in a predominantly Dutch community.

“This screening aims to foster understanding within the community about the unique challenges faced by minority students and immigrant families, and to spark conversations about equity in education,” said Cynthia Martinez, the film's director and producer.

The documentary explores students’ dreams of being the first in their families to attend college, while grappling with the challenges of virtual learning and the high costs of higher education during the pandemic.

The film dives deep into themes of education equity, identity, and the immigrant experience, providing a powerful narrative of resilience and determination.

The screening will also feature a panel discussion with Martinez and two of the film’s protagonists, Nayeli Mora and Gael Figueroa Enriquez. The panel, moderated by LAUP CEO Johnny Rodriguez, will explore important topics like education equity in public schools and the lived experiences of minority students.

The event is open to the public, and tickets can be purchased online at www.parktheatreholland.org or at the box office on the day of the event.
