5K raises awareness for limb loss
The City of Kentwood Parks & Recreation Department and Mary Free Bed Orthotics & Prosthetics + Bionics are teaming up for the Limb Loss Awareness 5k and Kid’s Fun Run. The family friendly event takes place on Saturday, April 26, at Veteran’s Memorial Park, 355 48th St. SE in Kentwood.
Now in its seventh year, this inclusive event welcomes participants of all-ages and all-abilities, featuring a 5K run/walk and a one-mile children’s fun run. All proceeds from the event go to support Kentwood's Adaptive Recreation Programs which serve individuals with disabilities and provide safe and meaningful recreation opportunities year-round.
"This event continues to inspire the community each year as hundreds of participants from across Michigan come together to celebrate mobility and inclusion," said Shelby Henshaw, Recreation Program Coordinator, City of Kentwood.
The partnership between Kentwood Parks and Recreation and Mary Free Bed reflects a shared commitment to community wellness and accessibility for all. Last year’s event garnered over 300 participants and raised over $20,000.
"At Mary Free Bed, we believe in empowering individuals with limb loss and limb differences to embrace life without limitations," said Scott Riddle, Vice President of Orthotics & Prosthetics + Bionics at Mary Free Bed. "This 5K represents more than physical activity—it's a celebration of resilience, community support, and the remarkable journeys of those we serve. We're honored to continue our partnership with Kentwood Parks and Recreation to expand adaptive recreation opportunities."
Among this year's participants is Stacie Carr, a paraprofessional from Cedar Springs, a wife, and a mother of two. After a traumatic fall 18 years ago, that resulted in multiple surgeries and Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, which is best known for its intense burning pain, the decision was made to amputate below her knee in January 2020. Then, in May of 2024, Carr underwent an innovative procedure called osseointegration to help reduce her pain and improve her mobility and overall well-being.
"Thanks to Mary Free Bed, neurosurgical pain control, and osseointegration, I'm finally experiencing what it means to move more freely again," said Carr. "Participating in the Limb Loss Awareness 5K represents a personal milestone in my recovery journey and an opportunity to connect with others who understand both the challenges and triumphs of limb difference. I'm grateful to Mary Free Bed and Kentwood for creating an event where every step forward—whether it's your first or your thousandth—is celebrated.
