Fun run inspired by community champion to benefit public media

Inspired by Shelley Irwin’s passion for movement and community engagement, WGVU Public Media will host the inaugural The Shelley Irwin Fun Run on April 19 at Millennium Park, 1415 Maynard Ave SW in Walker. The event features a 5K fun run, two-mile walk, and one-mile dog walk and kids Run.

For nearly 24 years, Irwin has been a familiar voice as the host of the morning show on WGVU Public Media, West Michigan’s PBS and NPR station. She is a trusted storyteller, champion of local issues, and an advocate for the people and causes that shape the region.

Beyond the airwaves, her influence extends deep into the community. She has served on dozens of nonprofit boards, including the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids and Meals on Wheels Western Michigan, where she has had a pivotal role in supporting essential services. She also made history as the first female president of the Grand Rapids Lions Club, paving the way for future leaders. Her service also extends to organizations like CSNIP and PAWS With A Cause, reflecting her deep passion for animals.

A true West Michigan icon, Irwin is a fixture at local endurance races and triathlons, bringing the same drive, energy, and commitment to the starting line as she does to her professional and volunteer work. Whether behind the microphone, leading nonprofit initiatives, or crossing the finish line, her passion for service, health, and community continues to inspire those around her.

“Movement is my passion and I embrace every opportunity to set and pursue new fitness goals. With my boundless ‘energizing bunny energy,’ both in my work at WGVU and in my fitness journey, I’m excited to invite you to join me in supporting this event, whether through sponsorship or participation,” said Irwin.

All event proceeds will support WGVU Public Media in providing essential services to West Michigan, including local journalism, educational programming, cultural programs, and commercial-free broadcasting.

The Shelley Irwin Fun Run is sponsored by Athletico Physical Therapy, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Breton Group, Daily Deals Food Outlet, DEKSIA, Gazelle Sports, Girl Scouts, Grand Bay Promotions, Great American Bagel, Horizon Bank, Kennari Consulting, Kent County Parks Foundation, Nothing Bundt Cakes, Oasis Senior Advisors, Paws With A Cause, Priority Health, Sabo PR, SeyferthPR, Sonder CPA, Spartan Nash, Swift Printing, West Michigan Newspop, Western Michigan University–Grand Rapids campus.
