Pure Architects Founder and CEO, Zachary Verhulst has been recognized as the Young Architect of the Year by the Michigan Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). The Young Architect Award recognizes proficiency and exceptional accomplishments in, and contributions to, the profession by an architect who has been a member of the AIA Michigan Chapter for at least three years and is 40 years old or younger during the year of the award.

“I’m grateful to receive this recognition from my peers within the AIA Michigan Chapter,” said Verhulst. “Since launching Pure Architects in 2020, we have been focused on collaborating with our clients in a way that values the input of all participants, and then uses that input to design spaces that connect the client’s needs with the values of the surrounding environment and community. We’re honored to have our approach recognized by other AIA members.”

Pure Architects was founded in 2020 and has offices in Grand Rapids and Detroit. The company employs 28 people who specialize in innovative design work. The vision of the company is that every project, every building, makes an impact beyond its walls. As a Black-owned design firm leading a team devoted to equity and design excellence, Pure sets out to provide comprehensive and inclusive solutions in every project they take on. The staff is committed to an empathetic, economically responsible, and environmentally mindful process, that manifests purpose in place.

Verhulst was previously selected as Young Architect of the Year in 2019 by the Grand Rapids AIA Chapter.

“Zach’s dedication to elevating our profession, his commitment to social responsibility, and remarkable leadership at Pure Architects has significantly impacted our region,” said Tod R. Stevens, President, AIA Grand Rapids Chapter. “This recognition of one of West Michigan's own is well-deserved, and I look forward to seeing his continued contributions to the architectural community.”
