Local judo leader to be recognized for volunteer efforts

The Meijer State Games of Michigan officials announced Jim Murray as their 2024 Volunteer of the Year. The 2024 Volunteer of the Year along with the 2024 Athletes of the Year will be recognized at the 2025 Summer Games Opening Ceremony taking place on June 20 at the Meijer Sports Complex in Rockford.

Grand Rapids native Jim Murray has dedicated his life to giving back and helping others succeed, both on and off the mat. From 2011 through 2024, he served as the Meijer State Games of Michigan Judo Tournament Director, while also founding Godai Judo in Grand Rapids and leading organizations such as the Konan Judo Association and Judo Affiliates of Michigan. A firm believer in judo's ability to positively shape lives across all ages and demographics, Murray’s impact extends beyond the sport.

In addition to his contributions to the judo community, Murray has raised significant funds for the MS Society and the Cancer Society. Married for 38 years, he is the proud father of two children, including a son who has followed in his footsteps as a highly accomplished judo official.

The Volunteer of the Year award is presented by Lake Michigan Credit Union.
