Mental health advocate, author, and model Dez Durden has been crowned Ms. Michigan Petite USA 2025. She is Michigan's first queen from Grand Rapids. Durden will compete for the title of Ms. Petite USA in Chicago in July.
A Benton Harbor native, Durden now resides in Grand Rapids. She is the Founder of When Roses Bloom, a platform that fosters open discussions on mental health through storytelling, community, and support. Durden authored a book of poetry of the same name that delves into themes of resilience and self-discovery. Her upcoming book, "From the Soil," explores her childhood experiences, overcoming hardships, and finding her voice.
According to Durden, winning the Ms. Petite USA 2025 title would allow her to further her mission of breaking mental health stigmas, empowering women of all sizes, and inspiring young girls and youth to embrace their unique selves. She hopes to use this platform to grow When Roses Bloom and bring more mental health resources and discussions to communities in need.
"Being the first queen from Grand Rapids and Benton Harbor to represent Michigan at Nationals is an incredible honor. I hope to inspire others who may not see themselves represented in traditional pageantry. My goal is to show that strength, beauty, and impact come in all forms, including petite women who are powerful forces for change," said Durden.
The selection process for the Michigan crown involves contestants submitting portfolios highlighting their service, community engagement, state affiliations, and reasons they would best represent Michigan.
Petite USA is the largest national beauty pageant for women 5'6" and under, providing a platform for underrepresented women in the beauty and pageant industries. The competition celebrates confidence, leadership, and community service, promoting the idea that beauty comes in all heights.
