West Michigan Works! is accepting applicants for its 2024 Youth Career Readiness Program. Facilitated by West Michigan Works!' Ascend Youth Services, the six-week summer program runs from June 24 to August 6 and provides enriching career readiness opportunities for youth ages 14 to 24 across Allegan, Barry, Ionia, Kent, Montcalm, Muskegon and Ottawa counties. Applications are being accepted from April 10 to May 3.

The Ascend Summer Youth Career Readiness Program offers a blend of career preparation opportunities designed to prepare individuals for the professional world. At the core of the program is the in-person summer work experience, where participants are placed in roles that align closely with their career interests. This hands-on approach allows youth to dive into the industries they are passionate about and gain tangible work experience.

"The Youth Career Readiness Program lays a foundation for future careers by providing practical work experience and essential skills training. Our inclusive, multi-county approach ensures that no matter where our participants live, they have the support and resources needed to embark on successful career paths," said Chad Patton, Director of Development and Innovation, West Michigan Works!.

Beyond the in-person work environment, the Ascend Summer Youth Career Readiness Program features online training to enhance participants' employability. This includes a range of crucial topics, from career exploration to workplace problem-solving and employability skills development. Acknowledging the digital divide, Ascend Youth Services commits to supporting all participants who might not have access to the internet or the necessary technology, ensuring that no one is left out due to a lack of resources.

The Youth Career Readiness Program is structured to require a 20-hour weekly commitment from participants, which includes engaging in virtual meetings and activities every Friday. Youth are compensated $14 per hour for their time in the program. The financial incentive is paid out weekly and is based on attendance and the completion of online activities.

"We believe that compensating youth for their time is crucial to this work experience," Patton said. "Our model offers a practical understanding of the working world and instills a sense of personal responsibility and independence among the youth, all while reinforcing the value of their work and the skills they are developing."
