Tech pros needed to inspire the next generation of coders
West Michigan Tech Talent is calling on tech professionals to volunteer as mentors for the upcoming {MI}Code Experience, taking place December 9-18. This program introduces third- through fifth-grade students to the basics of coding and inspires them to explore potential careers in computer science.
Last year, {MI}Code Experience brought together 71 educators, 75 classrooms, and 1,757 students with the guidance of 58 tech mentors. By fostering coding skills, the program equips students to become the next generation of problem-solvers, creators, and innovators.
A recent study shows that 93 percent of parents want their children to learn computer science, yet only 4 in 10 K-12 schools teach computer programming. {MI}Code Experience is working to bridge this gap by bringing technology education into classrooms with the support of tech mentors.
“This experience was incredibly valuable to our students. The program not only allowed our students to practice coding, but to learn about future careers in this fields,” said Michelle Kuck, Career Awareness Specialist, Career Tech Center. “The 3rd grade teachers that participated in the {MI}Code Experience absolutely loved it and shared that they felt it was a highly valuable experience for them and the students.”
Mentors will engage with students through virtual or in-person activities, providing encouragement, guidance, and real-world perspectives on coding and technology careers. No teaching experience is required.
{MI}Code Experience is organized by West Michigan Tech Talent, an industry council of West Michigan Works!. The council collaborates with local employers, educators, and economic developers to address talent shortages and create a robust pipeline of tech talent for the future.
Tech professionals interested in volunteering should register by Dec. 6, 2024 at https://www.westmichigantechtalent.com/mi-code-experience.
