Grand Rapids-based low-profit organization Jump Ahead L3C, in partnership with energy drink brand Play Esports Play Fuel, is integrating blockchain technology, gaming, and education to create opportunities for students.
As part of the initiative, Jump Ahead Play Fuel Esports Activation events will take place at the Ottawa Hills High School esport lab on April 5, 6, 11, and 12 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The events will introduce students to esports, gaming, name-image-likeness (NIL), cryptocurrency, sports, content creation, podcasting, and shoutcasting. Students will also have the chance to compete for $2,000 through Fortnite and receive game design education from Epic Games.
The Jump Ahead Play Fuel Esports Activations are open to up to 50 Grand Rapids Public Schools students ages 13 and older.
According to Jump Ahead L3C Founder Dee Jones, the initiative is supported through partnerships with Ferris State University, Grand Rapids Public Schools, and the Michigan High School Esports Federation, with a focus on developing career pathways in gaming, blockchain, and digital finance.
“We’re not just playing games—we’re creating a sustainable ecosystem where education, esports, and blockchain technology intersect to empower the next generation,” said Jones. “This is about building careers, strengthening the local economy, and making West Michigan a leader in the gaming and digital finance space.”
Jones plans to host additional activations throughout West Michigan.
“The esports industry is booming and Jump Ahead Play Fuel is ensuring West Michigan is at the forefront of this digital revolution,” said Jones.
Jump Ahead L3C and Play Esports Play Fuel hope to create an ecosystem integrating gaming, blockchain, and digital finance into education using in-game activations, education programs, and metaverse expansion.
“With the support of Epic Games, local schools, and business partners, this initiative is set to redefine esports and digital economy opportunities in the region,” Jones said.
