The Grand Rapids Community Foundation will celebrate Black philanthropy in West Michigan at the 2024 Love in Action gala on February 16 from 6-9 p.m. at the Grand Rapids Center for Community Transformation, 1530 Madison Ave SE. The second annual event is a part of the foundation’s volunteer-led Black Legacy Fund, a community leadership initiative that builds on the legacy of giving in Black communities in greater Grand Rapids.

Tickets are $75 and can be purchased online through February 2. Event proceeds will benefit the Black Legacy Fund as it continues to partner with organizations and nonprofits that uplift Black brilliance and improve Black quality of life in greater Grand Rapids.

“This second annual Black Legacy Fund gala is a great way to learn about what’s going on in our local communities,” said Denavvia Mojet, co-chair of the Black Legacy Fund’s volunteer advisory committee. “The connections made and stories told will connect each of us to our reason for giving–sharing the needs and how we can contribute to something impactful. Our hope is that attendees find the event engaging and motivating, so this work can continue for the residents who need it most.”

The 2024 gala will honor the legacy of the fund’s original philanthropists, including Margaret Sellers Walker Morris, Shirley Daniels, Beverly Drake, Ellen James, Cal Jeters, and Elias Lumpkins. Guests will enjoy an evening of dinner, dancing, and music to celebrate and explore the past, present, and future of Black philanthropy in greater Grand Rapids. Attendees will also be able to meet the Black Legacy Fund’s volunteer committee members.

In 2023, the Black Legacy Fund awarded $623,320 to 18 grassroots organizations and nonprofits. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit https://www.grfoundation.org/community-leadership-initiatives/blf.
