As uncertainty surrounds the future of the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program, the Refugee Education Center (REC) remains dedicated to supporting refugee children and families as they navigate life in West Michigan. Despite federal policy shifts and the challenges they present, REC program staff have continued to provide critical services to ensure refugee families feel supported, informed, and empowered.
REC successfully assisted 100 percent of the families they serve in registering their children for the upcoming school year. This achievement is especially significant given the growing concerns many refugee parents have about sending their children to school due to recent executive orders impacting immigration and refugee status. REC staff have worked closely with families to ensure they understand their rights and have the resources necessary to access education.
“As the refugee resettlement ecosystem faces uncertainty, one thing remains clear: refugees who have already arrived in our community still need our support,” said Meg Derrer, Executive Director, REC. “We are committed to walking alongside these families, ensuring they have access to education, resources, and a welcoming community.”
Looking ahead, REC is actively preparing for its summer programming, designed to keep students engaged academically while surrounding them with support as they continue their educational journey. These programs provide a crucial bridge for refugee students to develop language skills, build confidence, and prevent summer learning loss.
With the future of refugee admissions remaining unknown, REC calls on community members and partners to continue standing with refugee families, ensuring they receive the stability and opportunities they deserve.
