Kentwood-based nonprofit Refugee Education Center (REC) has hired Tatum Hawkins as its new Philanthropy Director. In this role, Hawkins will spearhead REC's fundraising efforts, forging partnerships and securing resources to support the organization's mission of empowering West Michigan refugee children, their families, and their schools. She will also work closely with the REC's board of directors, staff, volunteers, and community stakeholders to expand programming and amplify the organization's impact.

"We are delighted to welcome Tatum Hawkins to the Refugee Education Center team," said Meg Derrer, Executive Director, Refugee Education Center. "Her passion for our mission, combined with her strategic vision and experience in fundraising, make her the ideal leader to advance our efforts in supporting the academic and social-emotional transition of refugee children in West Michigan."

Prior to joining REC, Hawkins was the Director of Development and Communications at the Women's Resource Center and Children's Advocacy Center of Kent County.

"I am deeply honored to join the Refugee Education Center and contribute to its impactful work," said Hawkins. "I am inspired by REC's dedication to serving and uplifting refugee families, and I look forward to collaborating with our supporters and partners to ensure that every child has the opportunity to thrive and succeed."

Founded in 2006 by a passionate group of Somali Bantu refugees, the REC provides educational and navigation support services to refugee and immigrant families. Through its programming and community partnerships, REC empowers families to become fully participating members of the West Michigan community.
