Riverfront concert to support mental health awareness and homelessness prevention

Founders Phil Biggs and Michael Crittenden of Standing Together will celebrate two decades of serving West Michigan’s charities with a special concert event on Friday, September 13, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Legacy Park in Ada. The riverfront concert will unite local musicians and the community to support two vital causes: mental health awareness through i understand and homelessness prevention through Mel Trotter Ministries’ Next Step Industries.

The concert will feature performances by Phil Biggs and Kevin Paul, Michael Crittenden and Troll for Trout, and Andy Holtgreive and Domestic Problems, offering an evening of meaningful music. Throughout the event, attendees will have opportunities to donate to the causes via QR codes, Venmo, checks, and cash.

“After working with GRPS, Ronald McDonald House, Kids’ Food Basket, and Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital for 15 years, we saw the growing need for mental health and homelessness support,” said Biggs. “This concert series was originally created for children, but this year, we’ve expanded our focus to address these critical community issues.”

The event is expected to raise over $90,000, which will significantly impact both organizations. i understand will utilize the funds to offer mental wellness resources and outreach programs, while Next Step Industries will provide skills training and employment opportunities for the homeless population.

“Our partnership between i understand and Mel Trotter Ministries is unlike anything seen in other cities across the country,” said Crittenden. “We’re setting a standard here in Grand Rapids, demonstrating how businesses, artists, and nonprofits can come together to make a lasting difference.”

This initiative has garnered sponsorship from major community partners, including Daniel and Pamella DeVos, Honigman, PwC, Shape Corporation, CDV5 Foundation, and many others. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and purchase food and drinks from nearby Ada restaurants. No registration is required.
